Check Yourself

Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

You may be a person of great spiritual strength, but what is your greatest weakness? Pride? Fear? Lust? Alcohol? Insecurity? Maybe your vulnerability is thinking you aren’t vulnerable. Are you aware of what God wants to do in you? You may be able to predict the best way to make friends, make money, or make your boss love you. But, how good are you at gauging the condition of your soul? It might be time to check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Homework

  • Check yourself! Have you grown or are you still struggling with the same problems, frustrations, and sins from your past? As our friend Dallas Willard instructs – ask yourself two questions: Am I growing more or less irritated these days? Am I growing more or less discouraged these days? Check yourself.
  • Ask God to check you. Spend some time praying our verse for the week and see what God may prompt for review in your life.
  • Find a friend to check you. Surround yourself with truth tellers who love you and can check you.
  • Finally, strengthen yourself in the Lord. What are you doing to grow stronger?  Do you have a couple disciplines that bring you closer to Jesus? Check out the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook and implement something new into your life to help you check yourself before you wreck yourself.
