Play the movie.
The Proverbs often speak of life as a journey. We’re all walking down a path, but not all paths lead to the same place. Wise people have looked at the map. Of course, you can’t know for sure what looms down the road, but the wise disciple understands their decisions largely determine their direction. James wants us to play the movie. He wants us to begin with the end in mind. When you’re tempted to sin, lean on God. Satan knows how to get to us. He downplays sin’s wickedness and makes sin reasonable. Rarely do we stumble into sin. We know exactly what we’re doing. We rationalize and minimize. Giving into temptation is a sort of crisis of faith: we trust the gain of short-term pleasure over the long-term benefits of God’s principles. If we keep that up, how does our movie end?

Homework
How often do you sin? In a given day, how many times do you find yourself falling short of God’s standard. Conversely, how often in a given day do you ask for God’s help in the face of temptation? We must “watch and pray”. These are spiritual disciplines which will keep us from giving in or giving up.
