Our father in heaven...

Often referred to as the Lord’s Prayer, in this section of the Sermon on the Mount we find a model prayer for each of us. Jesus said to address God as “our Father” when we pray, and not simply as “my Father” or “your Father.” This revelation instantly moves the conversation from “me” to “us.”

By choosing the word “our,” Jesus is instructing us to acknowledge we have a common father who reaches out to each of us to meet our common need.
These words deliberately erase labels that divide us into separate political, social, financial, ethnic, gender, and even age categories. The implications are enormous, yet simply stated. We need each other!

Other texts in this message: Romans 8:16-17, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 3:28, 1 Corinthians 12:14-21, Ephesians 4:15-16, John 14:8-9, Luke 11:13-14, Ecclesiastes 8:11

Book Recommendation:
The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. This book challenges us to pray bigger prayers and pray them with persistence. Does God give us everything we want? No—a good father never gives his children everything they ask for. However, the scriptures offer us an open invitation to trust God’s character and his generosity enough to ask.
